Cigars are measured in two ways: the actual length of the cigar, which is specified in inches, and the cigar’s width is its ring gauge. Ring gauge is the cigar’s diameter given in 64ths of an inch. Therefore, a cigar with a 48 ring gauge is 48/64 of an inch in diameter. Contrary to popular opinion, the size of a cigar is no indication of its strength. The strength of a cigar is all about the tobacco leaves used to make it. So a large cigar made with mild tobacco leaves will be mellow and a small cigar rolled with stronger tobaccos will be more full-bodied.
